Michael Jensen Designs
Michael Jensen is a Wisconsin native and BFA graduate of the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater where his focus of study was in sculpture. He applied his skills and talents to decorative buckles at Bergamot Brass Works in Delavan, Wisconsin, to jewelry as a studio apprentice in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin and as a goldsmith in a fine jewelry retail store in Mequon, Wisconsin.
Catherine was raised in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the USA. Her childhood was enhanced by on-site exploration of Roman and Greek archeological sites, as well as the world’s finest museums. She returned to Wisconsin for college earning a BA. She held jobs in elementary teaching and in retail training before moving on to work with antiques.
As a result of their meeting, the partnership Michael Jensen Designs was created. They moved to Tokyo, Japan, where Michael established a business selling custom designed jewelry to both American and Japanese clients. Many of these clients remain customers to this day. After six and a half years in Japan (energized with a wealth of new ideas and experiences in Asia), Michael and Catherine returned to the United States, this time locating in New Mexico with its beautiful and inspiring landscapes. Michael and Catherineproduce fine metal work in their Southwestern studio. Together they continue to feed their passion for the sculptural form and refined engineering in each creation, along with their strong commitment to detail, quality and artistic originality.
Michael Jensen Designs are created by Michael and Catherine Jensen. The fact that the skills and tools used in jewelry creation have changed little in the last 800 years inspires them to create jewelry that honors the past. Their designs are bold and clean in silhouette, set with natural precious gemstones. This deceptively uncomplicated style is their trademark. They believe in and use recycled metals, as well as gemstones with limited treatment.
The inspiration for the VETUS Collection comes from the surface treatments and details of buildings, archeological ruins and the “mythology” of past civilizations. The ‘strongest beliefs’ have lead to the strongest images through out history. Examples of this are in the gods and goddesses of Roman and Greek culture whose temples and statues, even in pieces, carry a message of beauty. The design lines are strong, bold and flowing - to convey strength and comfort with a timeless feel.
Michael and Catherine’s greatest satisfaction comes from the completion of a well translated concept. It is this that not only connects us to the art, but its history and the continuum of time. All of our work is handmade and made in America.
